actress in the 1930's and 1940's. A huge box office draw and well-known for her comedies, she made the successful transition from silent films to sound.

Born Gladys Georgianna Greene in New York, she was working as a model when she was discovered by Fox Film Studios. She later landed roles in suchs films as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and The Plainsman. After her contract with Columbia expired in the 1940's, she took less and less work, and became a noted recluse who rarely made public appearances.

Arthur died of heart failure in 1991.
