In the early days of film, it was not possible to have sound accompany the film. When played in a movie house, there was usually a piano player or organist in the theater who would play the score as the movie played. Silent films mainly ran from 1894 through 1929, with the first film with an accompanying soundtrack (aka "talkie") was the "Jazz Singer" in 1927. By the late 1930's, production of silent films had ceased.
